Our 2025 - 2027 Challenges

Restoring Hope Through Education

Promote education excellence and safe learning environment in rural and underserved urban communities in the Grand Sanaga region of Cameroon by renovating school facilities and providing students with essential school supplies and scholarships.  Many schools in the region lack adequate maintenance funding and are frequently affected by natural disasters, resulting in unsafe learning environments and significant barriers to consistent school attendance.

Pathways To Self-reliance

Help young adults from underserved communities, achieve financial independence by gaining stable employment or developing a business.

We will start with two pilot initiatives in 2025-2027,  supporting professional training and grants for micro-projects. We will work  with partners who possess substantial expertise in the field.

More on Pathways To Self-reliance Initiative

Goals

This program aims to assist individuals, especially young adults from rural and underserved urban communities, achieve financial independence by gaining stable employment or developing a business.

Description

This program originated from our engagement with targeted communities under the Restoring Hope Through Education initiative. We realized that to ensure long-term success, we must integrate a component aimed at enhancing pathways to self-reliance for young adults. Our objective is to develop this into a sustainable, ongoing program. We will start with two pilot initiatives in 2025-2027, in collaboration with partners who possess substantial expertise in the field.

Hands-on Professional training

The pilot program is designed for young adults who have completed at least two years of higher education and are eligible to pursue skilled technical positions with international or local firms following practical training. Mbai Bassa Community will cover up to 100% of training fees and will subsidize a portion of application fees. Participants are required to pay part of the application fees, engage in community service, and provide mentorship to other youths. The program will partner with organizations that have demonstrated effectiveness in delivering training and assisting trainees in securing employment.

Grants to support micro-projects

This pilot program will offer grants to selected individuals who have shown initiative in developing a business and are assessed as having an increased likelihood of success with some financial assistance. The grant is intended to support recipients in reaching a defined milestone. Award amounts will range from 200,000 FCA to 1,000,000 FCA ($400 to $2,000).

Social Impact

By the late 2027, the two pilot programs aim to directly support twelve participants and positively affect the live of fifty people when including family members.

Our project selection, scoping and realization procedure

In this phase we have informal conversations with the local community. The goal is to understand the needs, what the local community can do on her own and whether we can carry the project in a way that allow us to meet our accountability and transparency requirements. Depending on the level of engagement, this phase can take several months to complete.

Our representatives visit the field, carry more formal talks with the local community and gather more detailed information about the needs of the local community. This usually results to the establishment of the local community formal wish list.

There can be several field visits to get to the local community wish list.

After the field visits a formal scoping of the project is carried out with different stakeholders including local community representatives, contractor and Mbai Bassa Community project evaluation team. Different scenarios and their total costs are evaluated. After some back & forth with the local community, we usually settle on a scope compatible with our anticipated financial means and responding to the most critical needs of the local community.

The project is submitted to our Board of directors (BOD) for a formal review and approval. Usually the BOD approves the projects with some conditions related to the scope, costs and approval of all concerned local authorities. The BOD can also send back the project to scoping if the conditions for approval of the project are not met.

A formal grant letter is sent to the local community. It describes the nature and scope of the work, prerequisite conditions if any. Generally the prerequisite conditions include the approval of all concerned local authorities and administrations, and the local community obligations.

In accordance with local regulations, the local community files the necessary paperwork with all concerned local authorities/administrations for the approval of the project. Depending on the location, this phase may take several weeks or a few months.

Once all the necessary approvals are obtained, the formal contract is signed with the contractors.  The work starts as soon as the availability of the contractors and the weather permit. Usually it takes a few weeks to complete the work.

After the work is completed, the  contractor  delivers the project to the local community, which confirms to Mbai Bassa Community the completion and the reception of the work.
