Community Highlight – Back-to-school celebrations at Mbai Bassa California Association

Fostering academic achievement and Inspiration from the African cultural heritage

The Mbai Bassa California members typically convene their monthly meetings on the last Saturday of each month. The meeting held on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, marked a noteworthy occasion: the annual back-to-school celebration, a longstanding tradition intended to promote academic excellence and strengthen relationships among children and the broader community.

Traditionally, back-to-school day takes place on the last Saturday in August, aligning with the commencement of the school year in California. However, due to the Bisai Festival in 2025, the 2025 event was rescheduled to February 2026.

During these celebrations, children gather to participate in engaging activities. Each child receives a bag of gifts and a $50 gift card. Students who graduated from middle school in the preceding academic year are awarded a scholarship of $75, while high school graduates receive a scholarship of $300.

The association is preparing to broaden the scope of this event by offering opportunities for children to demonstrate their talents in extracurricular areas such as African music, African languages, fashion, and poetry.

Mbai Bassa California recognizes that successful integration in the United States requires fostering academic achievement among youth and ensuring sustained inspiration drawn from the vibrancy of African culture.
